Fr. Marko I. Rupnik, S.J., is the director of the Ezio Aletti Study and Research Center in Rome. Attached to the Pontifical Oriental Institute, the Center provides Christian artists and scholars from Central and Eastern Europe the opportunity to meet and work with their Western colleagues. Fr. Rupnik, who was ordained a priest in 1985, teaches at the Pontifical Oriental Institute, the Pontifical Gregorian University, and the St. Anselm Pontifical Liturgical Institute. The author of many works in theology, which include the recent publication in English of his book In the Fire of the Burning Bush: An Initiation into the Spiritual Life, Fr. Rupnik is a visual artist whose paintings and mosaics decorate churches and chapels in Slovenia, the Czech Republic, France, Syria, the United States, and Italy, including the Holy Father’s Redemptoris Mater chapel in the Apostolic Palace. His current projects include the chapel of the Knights of Columbus headquarters in New Haven, Connecticut, and the new Orthodox cathedral in Belgrade.
